• Ideally, all batteries being charged by one source should be of the same type.

• A standard alternator regulator will never recharge a battery 50% discharged to above 75% in any reasonable time, because the charging current falls rapidly to prevent overcharging the battery.

A typical 55 amp alternator will start charging at around 40 amps but will be charging at only 10 amps after an hour. It will put into a halfcharged battery only about 20 amp hours in the first hour of charging, Thus in a couple of hours of engine running, a 50% charged battery will at best have been charged to 75% full charge.

• An alternator will deliver a very low output with the engine at idle. To deliver a meaningful charge the engine needs to be run at around 50% maximum rpm - see the alternator output curve (in diag. G).

• The first hour of charging is the most productive. Each successive hour delivers a considerably reduced charge as the charge current falls, despite the rising voltage - see the fall-off in output curve (diag. H).
